LEONA "ONIE" MARY AUERBACH
Leona "Onie" (Schaaf) Auerbach, 99, a long time resident of Atlantic, passed away at her home on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
Leona Mary Auerbach was born the daughter of Henry and Dora (Rathkamp) Schaaf on July 30, 1910 south east of Lyman. She grew up in the Lyman area and attended country school and high school in Griswold. Onie took nurses training after graduation and was a private nurse in a few homes. Later she was employed with Blue Star.
Onie was married to Robert "Bob" H. Auerbach January 31, 1942 in Maryville, Missouri. The couple were co-owners of the Pines Steak House in Atlantic for 40 years. Onie was the main cook and grill fryer there until her retirement. She will be remembered for her good heart and was a Chicago Cub fan for many years. Onie was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ south of Lyman.
Her survivors include her husband Bob; nieces and nephews, Colleen Sunderman, Waneta Sunderman and Joan Sunderman, all of Atlantic, LuElla (Bill) Lassen of Council Bluffs, IA, Elwin Sunderman and Sherwin Sunderman of Griswold, IA and several other special nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews that were special to Onie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Sandra Jane in 1946; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise (Joe) Sunderman and Ella (Lee) Nelson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman (Zeta) Schaaf and Louie (Helen) (Dorothy) Schaaf; and three brothers and one sister in infancy, great niece, Terrie Sue Berry who was very close to Onie.
Funeral Information
There will be an open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home Friday and Saturday from 8:00 - 5:00 and on Sunday starting a noon. The family visitation will be Sunday evening, February 14, from 5:00 - 6:00 PM.
Services for Onie will be held Tuesday morning, February 16, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Pastor Leon Hodges officiating.
Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. The Roland Funeral Home is caring for Onie's family and her arrangements. Condolences for the family may be left on their website at www.rolandfuneralservice.com.
