ARLENE CLAUDIA VOLK
Arlene Claudia Volk, age 69, a longtime resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Arlene was born to William H. and Thara (Zgoda) Colver on September 8, 1940 in Glasgow, Montana. She attended school in Glasgow and graduated with the class of 1958. On September 15, 1958, Arlene was united in marriage to Donald Leonard Volk in Glasgow. They lived in Glasgow moving to Forsyth, Montana for several years and then to Belleville, Kansas. They moved to Atlantic in 1968 and have continued to live in the community, raising their family here.
She was a member of the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, worked with Meals on Wheels, enjoyed playing cards with friends, shopping, photography, cooking and baking. Her favorite things were spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Arlene's greatest accomplishments were her volunteer work and raising six children. She enjoyed traveling to see family and especially enjoyed the holidays. Arlene was a very caring, generous, compassionate, humorous person, and a loving mother and wife.
Her survivors include her husband Don of Atlantic; daughter Dawna Smith and husband Derek and her son Matthew; daughter Diana Dreyer and husband Thomas and her son Scott and daughters, Amy and Heather; son David Volk and wife Terry and their daughters Kelly and Kristi; son Michael Volk and wife Sue and their children Jessica and Jason; daughter Janet Harden and husband Dave and their son, Dakota; daughter Kristi Coon and husband Justin and their children Tyler, Haylie and Maci. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents.
There will be an open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa Friday and Saturday, 8:00 - 5:30 and Sunday from noon. A rosary will be held at the funeral home at 6:00 Sunday evening with the family present for visitation following from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Her funeral mass will be Monday morning, March 1, at 11:00 at the S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Following a private family viewing, the casket will be closed. There will be a private family ceremony at the S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.
