IRENE LOUISE MARTENS

Irene Louise Martens, a long time resident of the Atlantic area, passed away Thursday morning, January 7, 2010, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, where she resided for the past ten years, at the age of 97.

Irene Louise Vetter Martens was born July 27, 1912 in Grant, Iowa the daughter of William and Sofia Vetter. She was married to Roy Frank Martens in Lyman, Iowa on March 29, 1933. The couple farmed, made their home and raised a family of two children in the Lyman area. She was a nurse in the Atlantic Hospital; also worked in nursing at Heritage House until retirement; was a member of Saint John's United Church of Christ where she was involved in her circle committee; and was an active member of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Irene will be remembered for how she so enjoyed making afghans.

She is survived by a son Roger Martens of Omaha, NE; 6 grandchildren, Vickie Retallic and husband Dale of Atlantic, IA, Susan Hoeck and husband Norman of Lewis, IA, Kenneth Weppler of Lewis, IA, Kirk Weppler and wife Susan of Des Moines, IA, Julie Gusow and husband Craig of Texas and Michael Martens of Griswold, IA.; eight great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; her daughter-in-law Judy Martens of Lyman, IA; and her son-in-law John Weppler and his wife Roberta of Atlantic, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Sofia; her husband Roy in 1962; an infant son Richard; her daughter Marcella Jane Weppler in 2000; and her granddaughter Kellie Martens.

Funeral Information

Services for Irene will be held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. There will be open visitation Saturday, Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 to 5:00 and the family will meet with relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. The funeral will be on Wednesday morning at 11:00 on January 13, also at Rolands. Pastor Celeste Waymire of Saint John's United Church of Christ, of Lyman, will officiate. The committal service will be in Saint John's Cemetery south of Lyman, Iowa.
